I have stepped back from tanking because I hate kite tanking. I main a paladin, and I don’t mind kiting but when it seems to be nearly every pack, it doesn’t feel rewarding. Jump in, pop some CDs to make sure you have threat then run away. As a plate wearer, it feels wrongs.
TLDR, it didn't change anything. At least for protwarriors it's the same as it was before. You go in - blow CDs and then run on the "hard packs". Actually a few packs are even worse than before: Frenzied Ghouls could be shockwaved into spell reflect. Now all casts are desynced and you'll only get one shadow claw reflect. As long as the majority of tankbusters are magic dmg and can't be mitigated by most tanks, VDH will stay on top of the ladder.
Just make tanking feel legion like, not neccesary to full extend but at least close to it. Tanks will still have to play it right on higher keys, m+ will see more groups running per weekly basis because wait times for lower keys will be less for tank role. I will be happy, blizzard will be happy with farmed /played . Give tanks skill cap, but with it ability to be self suficient more.ThanksSigned, one of many long time tanks who went dps starting this tier, because cba. when i can just chill as dps in dung.PS even as dps you have ton of stuff to do in higher keys (15+) but its still 5x more chill then playing a tank. i miss tanking from legion so much, because i could most of the time stay in the pack, not kite and was self suficient. when it comes to affixes like necrotic, raging and so on, you should kite its there to spice up a gameplay, but not every week.
I agree with your conclusion, on Fortified weeks as a protection paladin, I dislike doing +14 and +15 keys since it is a lot of kiting and with PUGs, the DPS usually doesn't coordinate in managing their big cooldowns. So if the fight is not fast enough it can result in death after running out of defensive cooldowns - all the running around with a group of mobs is not something that goes 100% smoothly with PUGs. A lot of kiting and little room for mistakes, so for weekly chest options on Fortified weeks, I usually just do the bare minimum with a guild group. Tyrannical week is like a vacation for me, it's just mechanics - higher keys can be pushed in time with Fortified for sure but first I would have to be able to survive the trash or have a good group for smooth kiting, so I much prefer Tyrannical for M15 and above. Sometimes also boosting some M10 and having an actual tanking experience. Thank you for the thorough work on what the changes actually mean!
Can tanking just be fun like it was in legion jesus christ. make tanks strong so people play them, it's hard enough to find them as it is
make tanks more beefier, it be nice to just tank and spank without having to run 24/7
its more so make them fun, not just strong. but it goes together many times. and yes its hard to find them, i swapped after 6 years aswell for this tier. And if you would ask every tank that did 15 - 23 keys. and even tanks that did +2, majority will tell you they play tank because no one else from their grps wants to, to not wait long for pug groups, to get weekly done faster and not because its fun experience.
I was Maintank for almost 5 Years now, but if i have to kite a whole +7 or 8 Dungeon with Ilvl 210 i dont see me tanking in this Expansion. I dont cry here, but its just that this tanking is not tanking, its run away as far as you can, and hope mobs get cc´d by pugs. i tried Pally DH Monk and Druid tank, all eat the same @#$% Dmg. :(
Why would you even pull frenzied ghouls to begin with? You can get enough % from pulling the first pack on the right then going left in 2nd bosses room in SD. Unless the first gargoyle is up on the right in which case you only need him and one of the black ghosts in jail on the left for %
I play my prot pally to stand my ground in the face of enemies and protect my friends. If I wanted to kite I would play frost mage.
Give Pallys the passive armor back that you took away!
I am 100% behind the direction of 'tanks shouldn't be kiting as a default'. The ability and skill to kite has a place in your toolkit, but it should not be the entire toolkit itself. As a paladin tank, I feel I have a good mix of staying power and kiting potential, but I know for a fact that if I didn't run with a balance and resto druid, one for trees and one for vortex and both with a knockback, I would be dying constantly on many of the pulls we do in the 14-15 range. The Soul Split and Corroded Claws change is definitely nice. After some learning we realized that I just... had to have all cooldowns up for what appeared to be a minor pull - the three corroded claws mobs plus the stitches style mob would just wreck you if they decided to cast it all at once.We don't need to be able to solo the whole instance, but dying in a global on a trash pull with your active mitigation up feels extraordinarily bad.
Forget Legion, go back to MoP Tanking. Make it so we can stay and tank by playing right and doing mechanics, and use Active Mitigation mostly, and kite when needed, as the skill check. Mix Avoidable and Unavoidable damage with Tankbusters, and penalize Tanks for not using AM appropriately. Also give Tanks more stylistic flavor, Paladins should be the stand and fight defensive class, Druids just shrug off damage and roar, BDK is about withering and draining foes to stay alive, Brew is Elusive as hell and drunk all the time, Prot Warrior is a mobile battlefield Tactician, and DH relishes in the pain to push their boundaries.
