I'd say it was a failure but people complained about the looks of tier sets as much as the armor sets not to mention the usually divisive set bonuses
It'd be nice to have Tier sets back in Shadowlands.
When that was announced I thought it was a good idea. I was fine with no more class unique sets for a while, & I thought it would let the devs be more creative with designs. What I didn't expect was it to be a removal of tier bonuses: We essentially lost a raid progression reward system & it was replaced with nothing.
Every single time they have removed tier sets it has been a mistake. And of course people are going to complain when consistently some of the sets just look awful. And by consistantly i mean the mail sets.
Short answer: No, it was not a good idea to remove them.Somewhat longer answer: Inventing these new systems every expansion just to throw them away for some new system is really, really bad. Shadowlands needs to take the best gameplay system parts of what made previous expansions great and go from there.
They're still too bulky and flashy.I miss when the Tier sets were simplistic designs. Thank god for transmog. My guess is that they're trying to up the visuals and 3D meshes, but the game engine's limitations keep them chained... it has become standard for sets to be bulky and over-the-top, but when they do simple designs people complain that things look like quest items.
Tier sets have been in the game since vanilla and it's a shame they were removed in BFA only to be replaced by a infinitely worse azerite system. I have no idea what blizz was thinking. They have the biggest MMORPG on the market and they are complaining about their artists having a hard time making a new class set every tier? comon bruh, they started HD-ififying BC sets in Legion, why not do the same for all the other ones? Sure its lazy but its something! I would much rather they use tier sets over azerite gear, and start recycling older tier set bonuses properly tuned ofc.
I for one miss tier sets and the different mogs. I always enjoyed collecting them from each raid.
Look at the design of the tier sets for the last raid in this expansion for mail and leather....if more then 15 minuts of an interns time in the art departmwnt went into them I would be very surprised....let be real, class specific sets are the best thing...fingers crossed for a return to that instead of "hey, I have the same set as 20% of the population...SOOO unique. That why I didnt transmog to a single piece of raid armor for the entirety of BFA. It just sucked.
I absolutely miss tier sets, I'm a tier sets fan. However, the biggest gripe for me are the class armor skins that no longer exist. That's just flat out laziness that all classes who wear the same armor type look the same. It's completely boring, lacks innovation and is starting to weigh on me in terms of game aesthetics. Can't tell a damn pally from a warrior or a death knight anymore and basically eliminates any remnant of class uniqueness
I never liked tier set bonuses.Azerite armor certainly had issues, but I preferred them to the tier set bonuses. In my ideal world, we got Azerite gear that changed talents when you changed specs. As for mog, yeah, I kind of miss there being more sets, but I'd also like to see more crossover. I hate looting something on a Warrior and then ONLY Warriors can use the item. Some sets had crossover pieces, which I always liked. I'd be fine with going back to the old system mog-wise if there was complete crossover.
I get the whole there are still X slots locked down but at least with the azerite gear we get more choices of effects instead of "This is the 2 set bonuses you get, if you can even get all the pieces that is mwahaha".Speaking of, it was humorous that just after they went through the "Let's rework all classes and specs so everything has clear distinctive identities differing from each other" they go and take away the visual identities of everyone.... My (self) righteous paladin doesn't want to wear the same armour as a simpleton warrior. That said, visually, there is a portion of people that just have their preferred transmogs nowadays and regardless of new gear continuously overwrite new gear with old looks, especially when new gear is revealed but many dislike that look but at that point it's too late for Blizzard to change it (as if they would anyway j/k).I know modders for other games that release in advance concepts of work and let the players vote on which they should work on or what they think is no good, I wish Blizz would do things like this, it's not a hard thing to do to set up a voting system.
Personally, I'd like it a lot if they peppered in a sort of "Tomb of Sargeras" approach every few raids going forward - that being creating an updated version of an already existing tier set with maybe a few new flares, a few new objects on the shoulders, or something else going for it, and then mythic building on that (and obviously needing a whole new set designed for Death Knight (where needed), Monk, and Demon Hunter). Maybe they could do something like that in Shadowlands with ICC tier sets, which somewhat follows the flavor (at least to me) of having the Tomb tier be updated BC gear, given that both build on themes played out in their respective expansions.
Talking just about visual sets.. I even prefer BFA way.In Legion YOU (not looking at others for a moment), got 1 leveling set1 dungeon set1 extra order hall set3 sets from content patches: Nighthold, ToS, Antorus 1 extra transmog from HelyaAnd from those really class themed were only Tos and Order Hall - others looked no more generic than armor type based ones.In BFA you have option to choose from2 leveling sets2 dungeon sets1 set from Uldir, Dazar'Alor, Eternal Palace, Ny'alotha2 sets Arathi and Darkshore themed (with extra significant difference between standard and more elite sets.)1 zone specific from NazjatarThere is enough choice for you to look different that others next to you and saying every plate user looked same is big stretch at least. Did you even seen anyone actually wearing those sets in full? Sometimes picking one or two pieces to own composition - but then bigger variety of pieces is better than less, but class specific.Personally I liked maybe 1 set per expansion, while rest were meh. Usually the early sets, dungeon and leveling ones are best.
There were few recolours of mythic sets for each type of BFDA armour datamained during 8.1 PTR. But blizzard lost their idea of making unique sets tied to seasons. In the beginning o BFA PvP and pve sets were different. It was funny to see Warhammer plate PvP set in season 1. Since 8.2 there is no difference in PvP and pve. Moreover in 8.3 sets there is no difference in colour of PvP sets. Wtf? Simply 8 sets per PvP season which are recolours of pve. Remember legion PvP sets. In each legion season there were at least 40 PvP sets including recolours. So now it's simply 5 times less sets. Also these tentacles looks so boring. And it's unbearable for me to see these incompatible red+gold/blue+gold colour schemes of BFA PvP sets.
In summary it was a good idea to remove the tier sets and it achieved the target. It helped emphasize the class and spec and finally gave players more gearing freedom. Ultimately this also gave Blizzard more creative freedom and try systems like Azerite or more mini 2-sets.It will also be beneficial for Shadowlands as it allows for Covenant gearing sets. I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going to lead us and I'm happy Blizzard took that road.
I think removing tier sets was a terrible choice. Here's the thing. Azerite gear is a pain in the ass to work with sometimes. Like it was stated above, they don't swap talents for each spec. That's obnoxious. There's no class fantasy in a bunch of generic transmog sets. I loved Uldir as a fun raid, but the mog all looked horrible, especially the mail sets. BoD had some better stuff, but it's still something I don't think I'd ever wear. Eternal Palace was... meh. Not great imo. And with Ny'alotha, I'm still holding my opinion. The armor is boring. I can compliment the weapons throughout each raid - they have all been impressive. But that's not what we're talking about here. With all of this said, I just cannot see myself going back to BFA to try old raids with friends or pugs. Right now, I have all of the main Legion raids on farm because they have excellent transmog. It's fun to collect and it looks great. What am I going to do in Shadowlands when BFA has boring armor that's not even worth going back for? My guess is that BFA will have zero replay value, which is a damn shame. At least I go back to MoP, Legion, even WoD, and I enjoy the quests (such as class quests, Suramar, the farm in Mists), or farm the raids for cool transmog (Blackrock Foundry/Hellfire Citadel). What am I going to look back on in BFA and think, man I want to go back to that! Because currently, the only thing I am loving in BFA is the mythic raids and visions. And running the raids on easy mode for "funsies" is just not going to fill the same satisfaction as actually being challenged by a raid. The current dailies are awful. And you may think "aren't all dailies terrible?" Nope! MoP had some good dailies. The fact that your entire account gets rewarded a rep buff is excellent design. I still cannot understand why they don't just do that with Legion and BFA.I guess I got a little off-topic there, but I hope you can see what I mean. Shadowlands better be chock-full of content, because when it wears down on me, I'm not going to be able to look back on last expansion and experience "the good old days." There's just no appeal.
I think removing set bonus and specific class looks was a mistake.I felt always like something was missing, Azerite traits were said to be the new replacement of Tier Set bonus and I felt that in the first patch but then it simply became something I needed to stick with if I wanted my toon to be competitive. It bored me, always the same traits, nothing new each patch, each raid. Tier Set bonus always added something new, interesting, funny to each class and this is something that I really missed in BfA. Also, after focusing so much on every class like they did in Legion (we also had a specific class set from just questing and repping around the class hall), they let us down with just 4 transmog sets that don't fit every class' fantasy at all, most of the sets fit just one class or 2 and this is a big let down for me, who always try to respect class fantasy and/or race fantasy (I am still waiting for matching weapons for each heritage sets).I sincerly hope they will bring back unique sets bonus and look for each class.
don't care if the armor comes as sets or not just please stop making it so ugly thanks.
