Welcome to the 85th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up! In this edition we're taking a special look at Classic WoW!

I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
The Classic Beta launched on May 15th and it's a community phenomena already, hundreds of thousands of you are all watching on Twitch and Youtube while the small group of testers are revisiting vanilla WoW.
Since it is a Beta nothing will persists through to the launch of Classic WoW in August so it doesn't serve much of a purpose to discuss the current state of the Auction House or the in-game economy, however some participants are already remembering how difficult it is to acquire money in the early levels after spending their entire capital upgrading their spells and abilities or picking up new weapon skills. Some even forget that looting from multiple mobs at once was not in the game at the time, and are wandering out of a quest area with lots of sparkles on the ground! Oh the humanity.

have a couple of interesting points that I think are relevant to goblins and gold-makers.
WoWChakra interviewed Executive Producer John Hight and Senior Software Engineer Omar Gonzalez
, identifying the following:
Retail and Classic can not be used at the same time by the same account.
There will be no WoW Token in Classic
Wowhead's interview featured this tidbit
Armory/API support is planned, but likely not ready for launch.
It's pretty disappointing to hear that you can't run the Retail and Classic clients at the same time. Many gold-makers have described their ideal scenario in being able to repost their auctions or restock their crafted profession gear in the background while they slog through the levelling process in Classic. It's expected that there would not be a Token specifically for Classic however, it'd be a close to impossible task to balance the in-game economy in two different games and have them align on a value of a Token.
What is not disappointing and is somewhat of a surprise is the planned support for an Armory and API.

There are many wonderful community tools that have popped up over the course of WoW’s history, that rely upon the API for profiles added in later expansions, such as quest or mount tracking, or character gear recommendations. Will there be classic support in the API?
I think we plan to do it, but not sure if we'll have it for launch. We're trying to make sure that API is available, but the timeline for launch we're unsure about.
In the same line as the game API question, if present, will classic have the same addon API as retail, an outdated version, or a completely different addon API? Add-on authors are worried about having to maintain multiple versions for both retail and classic.
It will be a different one, but I don't know if I would categorize it as completely different. We are starting with our modern codebase, and that includes the modern API, but there are addon APIs that don't make sense for Classic, and in those cases, we're trying to roll things back to reflect how the game behaved back then.
In terms of maintaining--for every content release we do for World of Warcraft today, we will change the API pretty regularly. That's not something we plan to do with Classic though. Once that API is defined and out there for the public, it's not something that's going to change. Certainly not at the cadence that the Battle for Azeroth APIs change. Hopefully maintenance won't be too terrible.
With the changes to the in-game addon API and it is still yet to be seen if modern WoW addons will function in this environment. Specifically thinking of TradeSkillMaster for example, this would rely on other APIs such as Auction House Data which so far as not been mentioned. The TSM team have not come to a conclusion in discussions on whether TSM will be present on Classic WoW. It almost certainly won't be possible to simply mirror today's version and see it work out of the box on Classic so it would likely require a new version created especially. This also assumes that TSM 'should' be present on Classic WoW, I personally don't think it should be since it wasn't in Vanilla and that would defeat the purpose of recreating that original experience. I'd say the same for other addons like
Deadly Boss Mods
but it appears that they will be present in some capacity, so maybe there's a precedent for TSM to follow suit. As soon as there's more information on that it will be shared in the

Classic Gold Making
Diving in to an older discussion when Classic was first announced,
people have been reminiscing on what they did as a goblin in Vanilla WoW

The +15 strength to a weapon and the +22 intellect to a 2H weapon enchants from the

Disgusting Oozeling Non Combat pet. It was used to remove debuffs so it had a lot of priority for raiders.

Back in Vanilla: I've never played private servers so I'm unsure if things have changed, but this is what I did.

Depending on the life cycle of the server - Anything that is used to make Raid consumables has huge potential. Herbalism and Alchemy paired together. If you're more into flipping - Buying out the materials and potions / flasks on a Monday, and relisting for a Tuesday (Reset day) can net huge profits.

Get yourself a 60 Hunter with 300 skinning and equip it with a
. Run UBRS. Be the first to skin

Another one is to have a 60 Druid to solo Lord Incendius in BRD. IIRC he dropped a rare Darkmoon Ace or something, and had some decent blues to DE. It was also soloable in a few minutes per run (as long as Blizz keeps Vanilla without the instance limit)
Be one of the first to have an enchanter that can make

Getting a stranglehold on something in one of your faction's stronghold areas and selling it on one of the Steamwheedle's shared AHs to the opposite faction.
Also Fire Resist gear. Be a leatherworker with Dragonscale leatherworking or something like that and make FR gear. Same for Blacksmiths. It will sell for a lot early on when the first guilds are hitting MC.

Modern Economy after Classic Launches
/u/cesm271 has some concerns about how the economy in today's game will be affected once Classic WoW is released
, sharing their thoughts this week on reddit:
I see a lot posts with questions about the new classic economy on that servers, but no post about how the classic servers will effect the "normal" ones. My guess would be:
less players on the normal servers (at least for several month)
because of less players the wow token will spike again
it will be harder to sell things, because the stock we goblins have is very huge and our customers are maybe playing classic instead of buying our stuff
i don't think that there will be less goblins on normal, because they will log in and repost their stuff while playing classic maybe
Personally I don't like that the community will split up on two "different games/economies".
We've already confirmed that it's not going to be possible to log in to both Classic and Retail at the same time, at least not on the same account. So some gold-makers may very well play Classic from a second account since a lot of goblins utilise multiple accounts. With that said, I think we may see an increase of players looking to participate in gold-making in order to sustain their game time subscription so that they can continue playing Classic WoW. The Classic game is not designed to have something to do or achieve every time you log in, like modern WoW, so I definitely expect some players to shift their focus from progression raiding in BFA or PVP for example to try and earn more gold for their Token while they play Classic.

Regarding this point:
Personally I don't like that the community will split up on two "different games/economies".
I've thought about this quite a bit I don't believe that it will.
First, Retail and Classic will not both scratch the same itch. I think we'll find that the people who enjoy Retail as it currently exists (general discontent with BfA excepted) wont like Classic much since it's a wildly different experience. Having played since the beginning, I can't count all of the various ways in which this game has gotten more convenient, easier, less tedious, streamlined. Most, if any, of those changes will not exist in Classic. We now take all those changes for granted, and I'm sure there will be a great many who, while playing Classic, will think, "I want to do..." and then are hit with the realization, "Oh wait, I can't." I think people like the idea of Classic more than they're going to like the reality of it.
It's hard to go back once you've been spoiled by convenience. Sure, we like to complain about a lot of the changes that have been made over the years, but now that they're here just try to take them away and see what happens. The no flying in Draenor drama is a good example to reference. Flying is almost irrelevant as a game-changer when you compare it to the dungeon finder and what it was like without it. I don't miss spending 30-45 minutes (on a busy server, no less) in /trade trying to find a group only to have it fall apart halfway en route to the dungeon.
That's the first camp. Now, the second.
Those who truly miss/want Classic and will devote the majority, if not all, of their playtime to it. This group is likely, if not given, a minority and any of those from the first group who thinks this describes themselves might not end up doing so. Again, it's a jarringly different beast, the way WoW used to be. With that group likely being a minority I don't think their leaving Retail will have much of an impact on the Retail economy. Especially when consider the overlap we're talking about, Classic players who are also Goblins. That's a double-minority, or the minority of a minority. We're ultimately talking about a considerably small segment of the player base. There might be some turbulence at first as the two platforms stabilize after the changes, but I think it will all settle with minimal upheaval overall.
As for those who do want to be Classic Goblins, well, that wildly different beast I referred to, yeah. Being a Goblin in Retail is so different to what it was like in Classic it's nearly incomparable. We're back to that convenience, ease of access, issue. We've been spoiled by the utilities and resources that so many talented developers, and contributors, have given their time and effort to over the years. The Undermine Journal, TradeSkillMaster, the Lazy Gold Maker Spreadsheet, the data curated by this sub (forgive my bias, since I am a moderator here), the discussions in Discord, etc. Some of that can, of course, be replicated for Classic. Some of it might not be.
Those three utilities I just named, (TUJ, TSM, LGM Spreadsheet), don't forget that anything that relies on the API for data ceases to function in Classic if Blizzard does not release a classic-specific API. That includes all three of those. They've so far not mentioned whether or not they'll do this.
As for TSM itself, that's a separate discussion. I'll just say that the most recent communication on TSM for Classic simply refers back to Blizzard (Discord, last week, comment by TSM developer Sapu), stating that it depends on what they do. This implies that without that API there will not be a TSM developed for Classic, otherwise it wouldn't really matter what Blizzard does/does not do. What would TSM even be with the API, anyway? Again, a separate topic.
Anyway, a lot of people who are goblins only got into it once things like TSM, TUJ, LGM Spreadsheet, etc. lowered the barrier to entry and popularized it. The Goblins ways were a lot more of a drudge back then and it took a lot of tedious work that I'm not sure today's Goblins are willing to bother with. Not when they will have the alternative, Retail, at their fingertips.
Those of us who were Goblins in Classic, weren't Goblins in Classic, we were just Goblins. There was no alternate version of WoW to chose from. If there had been a way that is easier (within the bounds of the ToS/EULA), as it is today, I'm forced to wonder how many would have remained "Classic Goblins" vs. how many would have taken the other option. I, for one, am not going to be a Goblin in Classic. I did it then, and I do it now. Knowing both, I can't go back, I don't want to go back. To those who do, here's to your success!
The 'reality' of the Classic game is certainly something a lot of players may not have been expecting, there has already been a Blue post outlining some of the frequent 'bug reports' that are not actually bugs including some infamous aspects of vanilla WoW like severely low drop rates of quest items or Quests objectives and points of interests are not tracked on the map or minimap.

For me personally I don't intend to play Classic either, I wasn't a gold-maker then and I can't stomach the idea of trying to be a gold-maker with the reduced number of potential markets and increased competition as players have matured and learned everything there is to know about the game. I suppose it's a little hypocritical of me to be sharing the strategies above on a public platform like this and then saying there'll be too much competition, but I'm fine with that as I barely have enough time to play the modern game anyway.
Transferring between Classic and Retail
The topic of transferring wealth between both versions of the game was raised in the community this week, and while we have no official stance or comment from Blizzard (which I'm currently working on) it's worth speculating on the scenario.

I'm an established goblin, making millions on my realm but no way wanna do it on classic. i want to only enjoy the gameplay without caring about ah, of course with gold in the bag :)
so how much you guys think 100k gold will buy you from classic gold ? 1k 2k gold ? maybe even less. let's try to guess a exchange rate.
I hadn't thought of this until reading it on the subreddit, however it's a potential 'market' whereby you'd exchange gold or even sell a service in Classic WoW. Accepting gold on retail WoW for a carry through a dungeon in Classic might be quite lucrative, assuming it's allowed.

I suppose at this point we don't know for sure whether or not this will be something you can do. So until we have official word from blizzard we can only speculate.
To answer your question, I think we're somewhere in the order of magnitude of of ~1000x more efficient now. Meaning I think it's about as easy to get 30k gold an hour as it used to be to get a consistent 30g an our (early vanilla). The thing with classic, though, is that there isn't a never ending supply of shit to buy. People will run out eventually. Once they get their epic mounts it's basically just pets (which are boring AF) and raid mats
This is a great point and is an important reminder that the purpose of having gold in Classic is only really hinged on the 'essentials' as we have often described. Repairs, travel, reagents and skills. There are no gold-sinks or Black Market Auction Houses so eventually the longer players are playing their gold will become worth less as there's fewer things to use it on. The ramp up to that point is slow though,

While you can probably get away with it... no way 100k for 1000g. Think more like 2 or 3 million gold initially.
A lot of people, I think, are not aware of how hard it was to farm gold in Vanilla WOW. Not only is everyone going to be dead broke when they hit level 60, let alone have enough to get epic riding, there is no fast way to inject gold into the economy. To my memory, your best bet was just to spend hours and hours farming Tyr's Hand in Eastern Plaguelands as there were lvl 60 elite mobs that could be solo'd if you had decent enough gear (not crap leveling greens).
Just for additional context. I remember literally not spending a single copper on anything other than repairs and flight costs once while leveling an alt and when I hit level 40 I still had not earned enough gold to pay for 60% mount riding skill (cost was like 30g or something, I can't remember). Gold gains are SLOW SLOW SLOW!!!
