Vol'dun Story - Questing with the Sethrak and Vulpera

Vol'dun, the final Battle for Azeroth leveling zone to open on the Alpha, is a desert zone inhabited by the Sethrak and Vulpera. We're previewing the major story lines from this zone in this post! if you are interested in a spoiler-free preview, check out our

Ages ago, Vol'dun was attacked by the Old Gods. It now serves as a desert and place for unwanted Zandalari criminals.
We find ourselves in Vol'dun to track down General Jakra'zet, one of the members of the Zanchuli Council that has sided with Zul. Along the way we befriend the Vulpera and learn more about the different factions of the Sethrak. While initially we fight back against Sethrak that are enslaving the Vulpera, we learn that not all Sethrak are corrupt. After we find and rescue Warguard Rakera, who was exiled, we then work together with the Sethrak and the Vulpera to fight the Fatihless. This is a group of Sethrak led by Korthek who brought war upon the lands in the hopes of finding the remaining keys needing to summon Mythrax.
While we track down and defeat Korthek, this was simply a trap. General Jakra'zet was able to invade the Temple of Sethrallis and retrieve the missing pieces needed to summon Mythrax.

Clues to Rakera
The story starts as you find yourself enslaved an underground cave along with the Vulpera Nisha. Together you escape and make your way back to the Vulpera camp. Here you find Bladeguard Kaja, greatly weakened due to a lightning strike. You must gather the restorative venom from nearby wasps to help her heal (
). You'll also get a ferret pet in
You come across a journal by Rakera (
) and learn more about her fate:
I write dis as I sit in a cage with a dozen other exiles, traveling to de sands where we will live out our days, however numbered dey may be. De air, heavy with heat, tells me we're close.
De sun has set across de dunes, providing some relief from de heat dat has made many delirious. In a sun-stricken stupor, one among us began rambling about a temple to de south dat welcomes exiles. I doubt he will make it through de night.
Assassins, sent by Jakra'zet, attacked out camp in de middle of de night. Unarmed and befuddled by sleep, we were unable to defend ourselves. I fought off de traitors, but it was too late; de survivors had scattered, each now forced to navigate dis unforgiving terrain alone.
I won't survive much longer without food or water. After traveling in circles for most of de day, I decided my only option was to follow de advice of a rambling madman and head south toward de promise of shelter.
As we head to the south, we learn more about the zone in
Can you believe this wasteland was once the jewel of the troll empire? A jungle teeming with life...now whatever's left is buried beneath the sands.
We learn about a temple providing sanctuary to exiles in
. We also learn in
that General Jakra'zet sent assassins after Rakera.
One within our group spoke of a temple in da mountains that welcomes exiles, though none are permitted ta enter without an offering ta their loa. I would have given anything ta find some solace in dis wasteland, but now I have nothin', thanks ta those thieving assassins. Each of us had a satchel dat carried da last of our possessions. We didn't have much, but it was more than one troll would need. If you be searchin' da dunes looking for your friend, could you keep an eye out for our satchels?
Temple of Akunda
We reach the Temple of Akunda but things seem amiss. For starters, every discipline must get rid of their name and take the name of Akunda. In one of the preparatory quests,
, we head to the Eternal Spring only to find it poisoned. As we try to find Rakera, which is difficult as everyone only replies to the name Akunda (
), we realize that everyone has lost their memory. From
Your friend's memories are gone. That is Akunda's gift to us. He takes away our painful memories, but a lot more then dat has gone missing lately. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast, and it's gettin' worse by de day. Something's not right. Meijani and I had to a plan. We were going to do... something... in the Valley of Sorrows. It's where Akunda keeps the forgotten memories. If you're looking for answers, findin' Meijani is de best place to start.
Down in the Valley of Sorrows we learn disturbing things in

We fight back against the fake Akunda in
, restoring the real Akunda's memories as well as those of Rakera. In
It is as I suspected. General Jakra'zet has troops in de desert, unbeknownst to de king.
They scour de dunes, searching for a weapon dat can destroy de city, killing any who get in their way.
I have no idea what dis weapon is, or where to find it, but it can't be good if Jakra'zet is hiding its existence from de king.
We must find de weapon before Jakra'zet has a chance to get his hands on it.
We hop onto the caravan with the Vulpera again...and then are ambushed by assassins! We eventually make our way to Rakera's friend Julwaba, where we are surprised to find the troll taking care of a wounded Sethrak. Previously we've only see the Sethrak as hostile.
As we find a cure for the poison, we learn more about the history of the Sethrak at Zul'Ahjin.
The city has fallen. Nothing was left in the wake of the battle between Sethraliss and Mythrax. Our loa gave her life to keep us safe, and we will not let that sacrifice be in vain.
Things turn even worse when we find the missing jeweled eyes for a statue, which transmits a message to us:
Vorrik, if you are receiving this message, then I fear I was too late. Korthek has betrayed our people, and plans to break the barrier we placed on the tomb long ago.
I can only hope I've hidden my key well enough so that you are the only one to find it.
Keys to Mythrax
We then take the key and head to the Sanctuary of the Devoted. On the flight over, we learn more about the Sethrak allies and the hostile Faithless.
Serrik: Our temple is the last bastion against the Faithless.
Long ago, we lived as one, as our loa would have wanted.
Since Korthek's betrayal, the Fathless have brought war upon these lands.
He leads them in their fight, searching for the remaining keys that will allow him to break the barrier around Atul'Aman, and use what's within to conquer all of Zuldazar.
We will do whatever it takes to stop him.
As we land, we learn that the Faithless have attacked the Temple and captured Vorrik--likely to acquire his key. In
we learn the importance of the keys:
Vorrik: This key belongs to the first Keeper. His name was Sulthis, and he died at the hands of Korthek.
Vorrik: Long ago, Mythrax the Unraveler descended upon our lands. He slaughtered all in his path, troll and sethrak alike.
Vorrik: Our loa sacrificed herself to save us from that monstrosity. She struck the C'Thrax down, but not before it was able to destroy the disc at the heart of Atul'Aman.
Vorrik: After witnessing his destruction firsthand, we knew that something must be done to prevent anyone from raising Mythrax again.
Vorrik: Although immensely powerful, Sulthis could not create the barrier alone. Korthek and I lent him our aid, and together, we sealed Mythrax within the great pyramid.
Vorrik: As the sands continued to spread, Korthek grew hungry for war. He plotted to unearth the C'Thrax and use him as weapon to conquer the continent.
Rakera: A weapon...dis must be what Jakra'zet is after! A C'Thrax...
Vorrik: Korthek raised an army of like-minded sethrak, and they began to slaughter those who opposed them...Sulthis' was the first to fall, but not before safeguarding his key.
Vorrik: Those of us still loyal to Sethraliss were forced out of our home and into hiding. We have been fighting Faithless ever since.
Our next order of business, starting in
, is to track down Korthek and acquire his part of the key, so no C'Thrax can ever be summoned again.
Korthek has grown spiteful and arrogant over the years, but I realize now that he has grown mad as well. Mythrax will kill all of us if he is released. For too long, I've held out hope that I could convince Korthek peacefully to abandon his heresy. I was wrong. All of Zandalar is at risk while Korthek and his allies hold even one key to Mythrax's prison. Meet me outside his fortress in the north. We will confront my old friend "Emperor" Korthek and end this together.
First we head to Vorrik's Sanctum hidden in the hills (
) only to find the Vulpera there hiding refugees:
It's unconventional, but I believe Sethraliss would be pleased to see her shrine used to protect innocents in need. And if these vulpera are fighting the Faithless, they will be useful allies.
The Vulpera and Vorrik then work together to fight the Faithless (
Even after all these years, I can feel the ancient power of Sethraliss in this place. My loa endures. Our task ahead is great and I will need a clear, focused mind to accomplish it. Allow me a few moments to meditate here, like I did in ages past. In the meantime, you should help the vulpera stir up trouble however you can. They seem to know you, and a large enough disturbance will distract the Faithless from our mission. Meet me back here when you're done and we'll proceed together.

I knew you'd come! I told them "<Name> cares about the vulpera and won't abandon us."
I'm here to help too! Kiro and Nisha are rescuing vulpera slaves, and I'm organizing caravans to carry them out of here.
It's kind of scary, being so close to the sethrak. But I know it's the right thing to do. Nisha said so.
Nisha's been stirring up trouble down at the slave camp. Just head west out of the cave, and down the first ramp on your right.
When in doubt, listen for the sounds of sethrak dying and go toward 'em. She'll be close by.
Kiro's hard to keep track of. Always on the move, always working on some big plan.
He left with Nisha. But, last I heard, he was heading down into the gulch to steal supplies or sabotage the cannons or something.
Oh, that's the best part! You probably didn't even see them on your way in, huh?
Sneaky vulpera are hiding all along the escape route, keeping an eye out for Faithless!
When they know it's safe to travel on the road, I lead some of the vulpera out and meet with the caravans who'll take them to safety.
Then I sneak back in and get ready to take another group. It's very exciting and I've only cried in fear three times so far!
If you need to leave, just pop out of the cave and head west. Cross the bridge into the ruins and you're home free.
The same thing you are, I assume. Look at the vulpera in here...They're hurt and need someone to help them.
The Faithless have enslaved countless of us and forced us to work and fight for them.
We've never been able to stop them before. But Nisha and Kiro have shown us that we can fight back.
At night, Kiro and the others sneak into the slave camp below and rescue the most vulnerable vulpera.
They bring them back here. Then I secure safe passage out to the dunes, where we have caravans waiting to take them away to safety.
It's dangerous, and I'd much rather be back in camp, listening to Ahna sing a song around a cozy campfire. But how could I when I know that my friends need my help?
With the help of the sethrak and vulpera, we cause enough chaos in the hopes of luring Korthek out. However when we reach the top of the spire in
he is not there to meet us.
When we do face off against the Emperor in
, things do not go as planned.
Korthek: I am the true power of the sethrak!
Vorrik: No. You are our failure. Sethraliss sacrificed herself so we could live in peace.
Vorrik: We will keep Mythrax's prison sealed, and I will unite our people.
Korthek: I wonder, Vorrik...If you're here, who's guarding the keys in your temple?
Vorrik: What have you done, Korthek?
Korthek: Ensured my victory no matter what happens here. General Jakra'zet already has my key, and by now... I suppose he has yours, as well.
Korthek: He will raise Mythrax, and we will conquer all of Azeroth!
Vorrik: You fool! Mythrax cannot be controlled!
Korthek: I did not force anyone to follow me, Vorrik... Our people are conquerors...
Vorrik: No, old friend. Our people are dead, because of you.
Vorrik: And now, you must join them. Sethraliss forgive you.
We head back to the Sanctuary in
only to find that Jakra'zet has indeed made off with the other keys. We then race to catch up in
They keys have been stolen! Jakra'zet and his troops attacked the sanctuary. The sanctuary was overrun and the keys taken... Your friends have already taken chase. Jakra'zet must not be allowed to ressurect Mythrax the Unraveler. He must be stopped before it's too late! We don't have much time. Meet me at Atul'Aman! We must catch up with Kaja and Rakera and stop the ritual!
As we hurry through
we notice the presence of the Old Gods.
My people have known about this ancient passageway for generations, but none have dared enter before now. The tunnel leads to the tomb of Mythrax the Unraveler and it is said that his power still radiates within the cavern. Who knows what horrors await us inside... It appears that your friends have already gone inside to face Jakra'zet and stop him from raising Mythrax from the dead. We don't have time to waste. We must find Kaja and Rakera before they confront Jakra'zet on their own!
A placeholder cutscene occurs, and afterwards, we learn that we were successful at defeating General Jakra'zet. Unfortunately, he summoned Mythrax into the world.
General Jakra'zet has been defeated, but his plan to summon Mythrax succeeded despite our best efforts. Were it not for the mercy of Sethraliss, I doubt we would have made it out of Atul'Aman alive. We must inform our allies of what has transpired in Vol'dun. I'll speak with princess Talanji myself. You should go and speak with the Horde. We need all the help we can get now. I'm sure our paths will cross again, <name>. It was an honor fighting with you.
Mythrax - Uldir Boss
Mythrax's story appears to continue in Uldir, where he is a boss. We have an early fragment of the Encounter Abilities:
Reduces the target's maximum health by 1%.
Spawns an Existence Fragment near a player who recently gained a stack of Annihilation.
Touching an Existence Fragment will consume the fragment and remove 0 stacks of Annihilation.
Summons an Oblivion Sphere near an enemy. The Oblivion Sphere charms all allies within 5 yards. While charmed, victims suffer 4500 Shadow damage and gain 1 stacks of Annihilation every 3 sec until the sphere is destroyed or its victims are knocked away from the sphere's influence.
