Concept Fan Art for the Free Shadowlands Mount by Peter Yu

There's been a ton of
fan made concept art
for Blizzard's
Shadowlands mount poll
, though scientific illustrator and Warcraft add-on author
Peter Yu
has taken a different approach - creating both unique art for each of the poll options, and special mount effects to go along with them as well! Each mount has at least three effects, with a mix of unusual benefits and drawbacks that make them truly unique interpretation of Warcraft mounts.
Keep in mind these are fan made interpretations - not official appearances or effects being added to the game.
Curious Caterpillar
This interpretation is a delightful play on the nature of caterpillars, with abilities that allow it to use it's body length to offer seating for up to 10 raid members, or morph into a butterfly and learn to fly! The question marks in Peter's artistic inspiration also seems inspired by Batman's
Riddler
, which feels oddly appropriate given the caterpillar's ability to change itself in unexpected ways.
Wandering Ancient
This Wandering Ancient may need glasses and have trouble walking, but nothing stops her once she gets going! We're not too sure of any specific inspiration from this design, but the idea of a forgetful old woman with hearing loss that rambles on about old stories will probably remind a lot of players of their grandmother!
Gooey Slimesaber
Peter's version of everyone's favorite slime kitty goes splat on impact and comes with it's very own squirrel companion who will unlock special questlines, at the cost of attracting more enemies due to its constant chattering. The duo would appear to be inspired by
Sir Lora from Divinity II
, a squirrel who is also a former knight, now also obsessed with a great acorn, and travels on the back of an undead skeleton cat.
Soaring Spelltome
Like most flying tomes, this fancy pop-up book seems to have a mind of its own, though the pages forming a seat is a nice touch, as is the Khadgar-head compass.
Nerubian Spiderling and Deathweaver
Departing from the previous, the Nerubian mount actually has two-parts, reminiscent of so many quests which ask you to raise and train a mount before riding. The initial spiderling is just a baby, so it rides you rather than the other way around! While most mounts have a cast time, this one does the opposite - requiring three seconds after riding in order to get the spiderling safely back into the jar once you've finished using it.
Once the spiderling grows up however, IT summons YOU! You're still in charge though... right?
Overall, these are great concepts, with a lot of flavor going into them, and you can check out the rest of
Peter's work on Behance
. These kinds of effects may be a bit too esoteric to actually make their way into the game, but it's a lot of fun to speculate and let your imagination run wild!
Don't forget, Blizzard's poll for the next free Shadowlands mount is still going, so check out the links below to cast your vote!
