Apexis Crystals in Warlords of Draenor are a currency used for pretty much everything--gear, mounts, pets, toys, followers. However,
Apexiskristall
was first seen in Burning Crusade as an item specifically part of the flying-only Ogri'la area. There were only a handful of items you could purchase with Apexis Crystals and they were mostly used to buy Ogri'la items, summon elites, and infuse "depleted Apexis" items to make them usable epics.
As it's the
Bonusereignis: Apexis
in-game, we thought we'd highlight the origins of this currency.
Ogri'la
Faction
The
Ogri'la
are a faction of ogres in the
Blade's Edge Mountains
, where their proximity to
Apexiskristall
has allowed them to evolve past their brutish nature. They are currently fighting a war against both the Black Dragonflight and the Burning Legion, who seek the Apexis Crystals for their own purposes.
Ogri'la is situated near the western edge of Blade's Edge Mountains, between Forge Camp: Terror and Forge Camp: Wrath, just west of Sylvanaar. Ogri'la is only accessible by flying mount/form. If your reputation is honored or higher with
Sha'tari Skyguard
, you can also get a free ride to the quest hub.
Reputation with Ogri'la can only be gained via questing, and their only repeatable quests are
daily quests
. Thus, there is a cap on how much reputation a day a player can gain reputation with Ogri'la, making it an "ungrindable" reputation.
In order to access the main quests at Ogri'la itself, a player must first complete the 5 group quests from
Mog'dorg the Wizened
.
Many of the daily quests will also grant reputation with the Sha'tari Skyguard when they are first completed.
While this faction isn’t grindy, players could continue grinding out elites in the area for more Apexis Shards and Crystals.
Acquiring Apexis Shards
Apexissplitter
are a lower-tier of Apexis Currency. They can be used to buy basic items, but you will also need to spend some to access more challenging content which rewards Apexis Crystals. Essentially, 35 Apexis Shards can be turned into 1 Apexis Crystal.
They are a reward from several daily quests:
Bannt mehr Dämonen
,
Und wieder ein Bombenangriff!
,
Die Strahlung des Relikts
,
Bändigt noch mehr Ätherrochen!
Die Strahlung des Relikts
is a tricky daily quest, as it requires you to memorize patterns of flashing orbs and correctly click different sequences repeatedly.
Also in this area,
Bauplan: Feldreparaturbot 110G
drops from
Analysator der Gan'arg
.
They can be found in
Kronks Grabbelsack
, a reward from
Bannt mehr Dämonen
.
They can be dropped by mobs in the flying-only areas in the west and north of Blade’s Edge Mountain, as well as looted from
Apexissplitterformation
.
Acquiring Apexis Crystals
Apexiskristall
s are the higher tier of Apexis Currency. They are used to buy the more powerful items. There are several ways to get them:
Use 35
Apexissplitter
to summon an elite demon from
Apexismonument
or
Teufelskristallprisma
. Required a group.
More costly—Use 35
Apexissplitter
at each of the four Dragon Eggs to summon and defeat. Each Dragon drops a scale, which put together creates
Umhang der Todesschwingenbrut
. This can be equipped, or turned in to
Himmelskommandant Keller
for one Crystal.
Defeat
Der große Sammler
, the final elite in the Bash’ir Landing Event, for one Crystal.
Complete the Bash’ir Landing Event and purchase
Beschleunigermodul
for 35
Apexissplitter
. This summons
Herold von Bash'ir
or
Bash'ir
who drops one Crystal.

They are also used to infuse “Depleted” Apexis Items.
Depleted Apexis Items
A number of "depleted" items will sometimes drop from mobs, generally the ones you are killing to loot Apexis Crystals from. When combined with 50 Apexis Shards, the items
upgrade
, gaining stats and gem slots. Once the items are upgraded they become Bind on Equip, and can therefore be sold or traded to other players. One thing to note, however, is that although the depleted items may also have stats or effects, they cannot be equipped.
The Depleted and Normal versions are both BoE and were quite pricey back in the day. Due to transmog and twinking, some of these items are still in high demand:
Kristallhandlappen
: Mail item with sockets
Abzeichen der Hartnäckigkeit
: Amazing item for guardian druids; still good for tanks
Kristallerfülltes Messer
and
Flammender Quarzstab
: Handful of items with a special glow effect override weapon enchants.

In recent years, some of this gear is popular for transmog due to its unique blue recolor: , ,
Bash'ir Landing Event
Every two hours, a group of riders travels to the Bash'ir Crystalforge. They are then attacked by waves of NPCs. The more waves you defeated, the more items you could buy.
Defeating Phase 1 unlocks
Äthertechnikerassistent
who sells flasks that work in Blade’s Edge and Gruul’s Lair.
Defeating Phase 2 unlocks
Äthertechnikeradept
who sells gems.
Finishing the event and killing
Der große Sammler
unlocks
Meisteräthertechniker
who sells meta gems with 5% stun resistance, caches that contain gear, and an item to summon an elite.
This event required many players to defeat—vendors would despawn if you failed the event.
Looking at old comments on the
Angriff auf den Landeplatz von Bash'ir!
page, this was a very hectic event. For example:
Phase II begins with many (20ish) Bash'ir Subprimal (elite)(12k hp) which spawn nearby. Things become somewhat hectic at this point. It did not appear that they all attack at once, but are either pulled or proximity aggroed.
After a short time, non-elite Disruptor Towers (70)(28k hp) surrounded by Bash'ir Controller (elite)(16k hp) spawn at a raged distance. The towers will fire AOE bombs on the NPC. Using ranged DPS on the towers will minimize the number of Bash'ir Controllers aggroed during this stage. As each tower is destroyed, the four Elites arround it will aggro on the NPC. Destroy the towers one at a time and be prepared for each group of Elites. Destruction of the Disruptor Towers will cause the Aether-Tech Adept Gem Vendor to be summoned and begins Phase III.
Shartuul
Shartuul
was an exciting solo challenge that unfortunately was removed in Cataclysm.
Shartuul
had a guaranteed chance to drop a depleted item, which could be sold for a lot of gold. You could also shard the items to get
Großer Prismasplitter
, which were also pricey.
Killing elites in each stage of the event also awarded a lot of Ogril’a reputation.
To start the event, you needed to get a
Rune der Dunkelheit
inside a bag. You then turned the item into
Kristallgeschmiedete Rune der Dunkelheit
and go to a warp gate to activate the Crystalforged Darkrune.
Once the rune is activated, you’ll take control of a demon with a unique set of abilities:
Zerrütter der Teufelwache
,
Verdammniswachenbestrafer
, and
Assassine der Shivarra
. Check out the linked pages to read about each demon’s set of abilities and how they were intricately used.
Shartuul
, the final boss in a series of demons, has some very-detailed user comments documenting the hectic nature of the fight as well. For example, this is just one excerpt from one part of one of four posts documenting the event:
Shivan Assassin forms used: All 3 forms are used here. Fire Form for primary dps and cleansing Immolate and Shadow Vulnerability debuffs. Shadow Forms for Shadow Nova AoE killing all the Eye Stalks summoned, and keeping hp up. Ice Form only to Ice Block back Incinerate (Shartuul yell's "Prepare to be Incinerated!" and is a 10sec cast, long enough to pop Ice Form, and Ice Block, then switch back to Fire/Shadow forms)
Start this phase off in Shadow Form. Shartuul will periodically throw a large ball of energy to the top of the Transporter in the center, which breaks apart and lands to make a ton of Fel Eye Stalks spawn all over the arena. They do not move, but have a long range mind flay attack. This Mind Flay is shadow damage, and if you have the Shadow Vulnerability debuff on you prepare to get owned. All Fel Eye Stalks have low enough hp to die to 1 Shadow Nova, so if you stand in the center of a small grouping of Fel Eye Stalks in the South West corner of the arena, you can wipe them all with 1 Shadow Nova and keep yourself a safe place to stand/cast. Fel Eye Stalks also cannot be targeted for a second or two when summoned, so wait until they start actually Mind Flaying you to pop Shadow Nova. If Fel Eye Stalks are cleared out of the corner, you can now switch to Fire Form for primary DpS.
Shartuul's primary attack on you is a Shadow Volley that periodically causes you to get the Shadow Vulnerability debuff (much like a Warlock's Shadow Bolt crit). Also casts Immolate, and rarely casts Incinerate (VERY high damage, needs to be Ice Blocked back). Spam Flame Buffet and PyroBlast for your standard DpS, and watch your pet icon under your party screen for any debuff's. Immolate and Shadow Vulnerability are the 2 you're looking for, Flame Cleanse off immediately. Periodically Shartuul will pull you to him, then teleport somewhere else. Just run back to your safe corner and wait for him to walk back into range. There are 2 things that will make you leave Fire Form. First is Incinerate. If you see him yell "Prepare to be Incinerated!" switch to Ice Form at once, and Ice Block at the last second to bounce it back. If you don't, you'll take about 30% damage which is WAY too much to take from a single attack. Then switch back to Fire/Shadow. The Second thing is when he re-summons all the Fel Eye Stalks. Use that time to switch back to Shadow, Shadow Nova down Fel Eye Stalks, and consume any old Siphon Life's with Shadow Bolt, then re-apply new Siphon Life/Shadow Nova DoT's to Shartuul and switch out of Shadow Form. 90% of the fight will be spent in Fire Form spamming PyroBlast/Flame Buffet and Flame Cleanse to keep all debuff's off you. This is a LONG fight, sometimes more than 10-15min, so keep your rotation going. If you start to fall behind on HP (Or you just want to speed up the fight) Use the Chaos Strike(Special Attack) to get back into the game. Again, only cast Chaos Strike when you have 10 Flame Buffets, and an old Siphon Life on the target with your Siphon Life Cooldown up and ready. You can try to also work in Freezing your target with Frost Nova, but that's an extra step that while handy, and it does do alot of extra damage, isn't always needed. Sometimes you just need to get your life back quick. Chaos Strike for bonus damage from 10 Flame Buffets, then Shadow Bolt to consume the old Siphon Life, and re-apply a new Siphon Life and Shadow Nova to regen 220K hp every tick (like 10% of your life per tick). No matter how much you mess up, this trick will get you back to 100% HP, which should be enough to get you back in control of the fight.
